01002 175-07 David 9-21-79.jpg

Would this be the patio at Robaire's. I was only there just this once....couldn't afford the place...

When I came across these negatives of David Hockney and Henry Geldzahler I didn't even consider posting them on venicepix, but on second thought I realized that David might get a kick being surrounded by all these back-in-the-day California surf locals. One might say he always had special appreciation for the California surf lifestyle. I always wondered if his bleached out hair was influenced by the surfer look. (Of course, surfers achieved that look totally naturally...ahem...cough,cough...)

On this occasion I remember him asking me if I could recomend anything in the latest surf/skate fashion and I suggested Vans, which I believe were a new thing at the time. Remember when you could buy their shoes at their little store up in Culver City/West LA ? They had a form you could fill out where you could choose a color for each of the panels in the shoe and they would custom make'em for you. The left and right didn't even have to match, which was perfect for David who was known for wearing non-matching socks.

It was Billy (Mil Mil) who reminded me of Robaire's. I think perhaps his father worked there for a while. It was on the oceanfront just a bit south of Windward... a small fancy restaurant, way fancier than one would expect in Venice.
It was expensive enough that after a bit I suspect that it was as if didn't exist for many of us

I'm not sure there was a Roosterfish in '79. I think that it was still a favorite mailman lunch 'hour' hang-out in those days

That is so cool you know David Hockney, and photographed him back in the day. He is actually one of my favorite artists. Allot of his themes are very California and water based, as I am sure you know of course. But that makes perfect sense that he appreciated the surfer lifestyle as it definitely comes across in his work. Nobody can capture that quintessential California essence like David Hockney.

"A Bigger Splash", a 1974 documentary film about David, his art, and his relationship with Peter Schlesinger has recently been released on DVD.:

(I'd probably rate it R)
I've never been all that enamoured of the film, but it is, like venicepix, a primary source slice of the era...
