.....It's not actually, but I can't remember his name. I do remember, however, an afternoon when I was walking the beach, just north of the Brooks jetty on a day when the surf was plenty large, but as closed out as you could ever imagine. This guy, who was a good surfer, good enough to be acceped by the locals, was the only guy out, and as I was coming up to where he was, he tried to take off and went flying, which wasn't all that surprising considering the conditions.
.....This guy had always seemed.....shall we say intolerant of my lifestyle....and so I was quite surprised when he got out of the water and walked over to me. "Could you check this out" he asked, taking his hand away from his face. His skeg had sliced him in the eye. It was REALLY gruesome. I walked him up to his apartment on maybe Duncan Ave where his girlfriend was home. She became quite distraught ( as was I also) but she didn't drive, so I drove them both in his car over to the Marina Hospital and hung around until his family arrived. Then there was nothing much to do but walk home.
.....They were able to save the eye, but with reduced vision. Needless to say, he never hassled me about my lifestyle again...
.....worst surf accident I've ever seen.....
