These photos are great. Thanks for bringing back a lot of memories. I lived in Venice in the 1970’s. My family started and owned both Venice Precision Roller Works and Road Skates. My kids don’t believe I used to have blond hair down to the middle of my back and a perpetual tan because I never wore a shirt. I have very few pictures from that time, so these are bringing back great memories. If anyone has specific photos of VPRR or Road Skates, please post them or share them with me. Great gallery!

Thanks guys once again. I have posted on other parts of this site through the years. For a moment I lost the link and my sister gave it to me again. I have seen all these photos stolen and put up on numerous blogs and not giving credit where it's due. To me these pics are precious and personal and to have them all over like that without credits and names bothers me. This has happened to me where a friend copies one of my personal pics and it ends up out in cyberspace. I recently sent the link to some of these pages and asked them to please give credits. I am on this site too (have a pic of me at the breakwater in 1976 or so) this was a big part of our lives back then. It was bohemian Venice when rents were cheap and we saw friends all of the time on the daily. It doesn't have the same feel and are bit lost when I walk down there now, unless there is a gathering and I feel grounded once again, if only for a moment. I hope this site is always here for me to go back to. Thanks for the memories.

Saw Randy Wright at his shop years ago and invited him up to my area to get waves...remember fishing on the breakwater with kelly and whipple. mahoney,diver dan, john pastana suntan dan, lars johnson,all of them hated fish surfboards back then my bro and i were the first to surf em at the breakwater and did we get shit...within 6 months almost everyone started riding em.. except for the Urbany crew... if anyone wants to contact me im at sagelove@pacbell.net. peace.

Well, not much actually.... "Guest's" enigmatic question below was actually the first comment in several weeks. Pbase was down for a while there and when they resumed they never got the counters (which you guys can't see) working properly..... and I was beginning to wonder if any or all comments were being posted during the last few weeks. Ray (as you can see below) managed to attach a shot of himself; something which I had thought was no longer possible (see the explanation on page top) but I haven't had the time to try to figure out exactly what code he used to do that.
The galleries seem to still be working properly.
Pbase is exceedingly inexpensive, and the pages always look nice and uncluttered so I'm not inclined to complain when they don't deliver absolute perfection....
Otherwise..... what IS going on????

I was not a local, local, ...but my dad lived close enough for me to ride my bike to the beach everyday. I too remember getting felafel and a vegetarian sandwich at the local health food store. Walking around and always running into a friend. I can relate so much to the last post. I miss it too.

But I have been scanning negs for a second Marina Skate Park gallery which I had hoped would be ready for the New Year. Didn't quite make it..... but soon....I promise!
It's the little black cat that keeps interupting me with his agonizing cries for more shrimp and cantelope!!!!

I might mention that the site has passed 20,000 main page hits, with 289,381 individual page hits, so people are still visiting . These days I believe the Skatercross gallery gets the most action which is why I thought to do another skatepark gallery next.

and I only took a couple of the shots featured on it. Not the one of Doug.
.....I haven't seen Doug Smith since 1991 when he recognized me walking down the oceanfront and emerged out of one the little pagodas to say hello. I didn't recognize him at first and I really wish I had been more friendly. I was rather surprised by his greeting because, quite frankly I still remembered all the shit he had directed my way back in the seventies. His brother was even more difficult to deal with. I should have been over that by 1991 because obviously he was, but unfortunately I shifted back into a wary, defensive mode from an earlier day. Even back then I had thought that it was a shame that he put such a huge wall between us since we had the art connection in common, so to speak...

There are two graffitti on the site whick I think are his:

The more I think about it the more I suspect that these should be attributed to Rick Martin. It's nearly impossible to ascertain if my negative is a picture of a wall or a picture of a picture of a wall.

We're back from Buenos Aires, a wonderful trip, and I'm going to try to start posting new pix.....but with the trip pictures to sort, christmas cards to make, LJ's birthday, and the holidays in general it may continue to be a bit slow here for a while. Finally finished my Skatercross pix. It was a real satisfaction to be able to clean them all up, but also a lot of work because I was such a beginner at the time. I'd only been taking B&W for a few months.
I was also reminded of how frightened I was when I first went out there. I can't imagine how they talked me into it. For this shy nerdy guy from the East it was like walking into a lion's den....

It took me a second to realize you meant 'writing on the wall" instead of 'painting on the wall in your previous post, referring to the warnings in the 2004 National Geographic link about the dangers facing New Orleans in as Hurricane ( by the way, the phrase 'writing on the wall' is from the Old Testament, the story of Daniel and BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST).
On the other hand, the little numbers you refer to I assume are the ones in each picture's URL. I give them the ones that appear below. I give each of my scans a consecutive number which makes it possible for me to pin down any picture that anyone should ask me about, without having to find it on the site. That would be the five diget number that appears below every one. The hyphenated number that appears on some, for example 71-3A is the original proof sheet and frame number. The word scanpix means I scanned a picture, not a neg (if it has the 71-3A type number it means that I know which negative it was but just scanned the print which is much faster) And I try to put a date where I know it.
The number that appears in the URL is given each image by pbase. What's nice about their system is that links and bookmarks continue to work, even when you move stuff around. For example, I moved Collie's gallery into to Memorial Gallery but it's web address remained the same so I assume a bookmark will still work.
Where it really gets strange is that the picture that Kelly posted at Bulldog of the skate and wave came with hidden data that pbase automatically displayed, camera, date, fstop,. and shutter speed which was automatically displayed, but which I removed 'cause I felt that it just distracted from the picture and it's impact.
This may all sound a bit obsessive, but it's not something that comes naturally to me. However, if I hadn't had the notion to organize these negatives back in the day there would be no venicepix today. I just wish I had had the fuckin' sense to date stamp all my prints from the very beginning (didn't start til the mid eighties!!!*&%$!!)

sometimes I can be looking at something then I'll feel something that draws me elsewhere. this time I listened and went here and saw that somebody else was felt sad about the people left scattered in the wake of Katrina but when I posted to Dave how he was doing with Katrina I knew it could hit New Orleans and I'm not even a meteorologist(sp) but you don't need a degree to know that hurricanes love hot water
and the gulf was at 80 damn near 90 last I checked . I have never seen water temps this high all the way up to n. carolina . it's 90+ in the Caribbean so the season is FAR from over

We always have to keep a close eye on any hurricane that resides in the western Gulf of Mexico. So far no adverse effects for us and the forcast paths only brush by, but you never know for sure until it actually passes by. Even then, we sometimes get coastal flooding when the wind shifts behind a storm. The worst flooding we've had since we've lived here was when Tropical Storm Josephine ( not even a hurricane at thet point) passed by 150 miles off the coast.
I've been working on a 'Memorial' gallery lately, which is why there's not been a lot of activity from me here lately. It's something I always had planned from the beginning, but , as I had expected, it's been difficult to do... a lot of work and a lot of emotion. I had expected that it might be done this weekend, but that may depend on Katrina. Can't have a bunch of negatives lying on the floor when there's a threat of high water!

I figured he probably came in through Bulldog, and I myself was mpressed if not staggered by his inventory. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Skateboard (the movie) once again. We saw it in the theater! In fact if someone had a copy with all the Allen Garfield edited out I might be tempted to buy it....

I moved the comment below here from one of the skateramp pix....
This guy's site is an interesting contrast to venicepix. He's got some interesting pix, but it makes me realize that my site is sorely lacking in pix of hotties in short shorts and white platform boots (maybe Billy can lend me some.....no don't!!!...really!). It appears, on the linked commercial site, that he has video copies of Rollerboogie, Skatetown USA, Thrashin', and Skateboard (the movie) with both Tony Alva AND Leif Garrett!!!, but expect many pop-ups and ghost windows if you go there.The Alva/Garrett pairing seemed like atrocious casting at the time but when you consider the personal odysseys of L.G. and J.A. it doesn't seem so strange at this point. Wasn't Thrashin' the one where they painted over all the graffitti on the 'tru local hangout' and then overpainted that with fake, though not unattractive, movie graffitti and then painted over that when they were done, as if it would ever remain clean for long....
Come to think of it, I do have a picture of Greg Bradford, STAR of Skatetown USA in short shorts...he always wore'em tight! You may also remember him as the 'love interest' in a couple of episodes of "Facts of Life"....but rollerskates, not white platforms:

It appears from the space in the message that his guy may have tried to display some of his pix here, though without success, which is just as well. I'd rather not see the site be too bloated with displayed images that have neither visual connection to Venice nor direct connections and meanings to the lives of the people who are part of this story. Most links are fine, though...

.....As you can see, I've changed root gallery page and this "Meeting Place" gallery. I suspect that visitors have always ignored the text and skipped directly to the pictures, which is fine with me....the pictures are what it's all about....but as there are more and more galleries and more visitors too, I thought that it would be a good idea to try to give some simple tips to make the site easier to navigate, especially for newcomers.
.....The pbase templates that I usually follow are rather tasteful and demure, but they also make it very easy to ignore text. I wanted to get the messages across so I sort of went to town with it. I may try to tone things down a bit in the future...We've been stretching pbase far beyond its original intentions with this site. There's no way I can build a page and preview it before it appears, so I just assembled a bunch of elements and tossed them, all at once, onto the page. Please feel free to comment here if my directions seem confusing

In answer to the question- was it always so incestuous - yes and no.
Some stayed with one, others went with many, some swapped and otherwise experimented - or all of the above at different times. Even the steadiest of couples sometimes had their moments -I think there was the same old double standard, where for guys there were conquests but a girl could wind up with quite a reputation. (If you were a true Venice girl, you could stand up to the vibes.) That said, it was all a lot freer. Some refer to the 70's as a bad 60's hangover, but looking back there were aspects that were quite idyllic compared to the 80's - especially since Aids had not yet been recognized...I definitely think of my teen years in Venice as free spirited. It was a subculture with pretty rigid boundaries,--meaning limited stock! ; ) Plus we were all so damn gorgeous back then- who could resist! ; ) Some locals were in (for the most part) monogamous relationships, for several years at a time - some are still together today! (Russ & Rona Webber) -- not to mention our dear Host& LJ.

Venice was FULL of cute couples , but I got to ask the older heads here ... was it always so incestial ? you know everybody going out with each others old girlfriends/boyfriends ?I just woder if the same habits from the 80's were going on in the 70's . Let's just say we messed with the same people . Venice was a like a small town in a sense.

There's been a lot of local chest-thumpin' on the site lately and that's OK (as long as it's basically positive and not just a lot of put-downs, especially of specific people pictured here). I guess I'm proud , in a way, for surviving the crap we went through, even if I am, deep down, a total wuss...I'm also grateful to the people who opened the door a crack.
However, I have always maintained that if it were actually possible to own waves, none of us would have possession...instead, the breakwater would be time-shared and all the lefts in the last week in July would be reserved for some real eatate developer in Touluca Lake. ( you could still surf in the winter:too cold for the rich [but they'd be working to find a way to dome the place])

As I've been building this site, a lot of it has been driven by memories, perhaps even more the memories of others than of my own recollections. However, I have also been trying to create something that might stand on its own. That's always been in the back of my mind....so your message made me very happy indeed!

I got to go surfing this morning! The sky was blue, water about 85 degrees, the red tide miraculously cleared up overnight, and a little swell from T.S. Cindy was coming in at an angle. I guess the word hadn't gotten out 'cause there was only one Krazy old Kook out making a total fool of himself.....oh yeah....that was me...

These photos are great. Thanks for bringing back a lot of memories. I lived in Venice in the 1970’s. My family started and owned both Venice Precision Roller Works and Road Skates. My kids don’t believe I used to have blond hair down to the middle of my back and a perpetual tan because I never wore a shirt. I have very few pictures from that time, so these are bringing back great memories. If anyone has specific photos of VPRR or Road Skates, please post them or share them with me. Great gallery!

Thanks guys once again. I have posted on other parts of this site through the years. For a moment I lost the link and my sister gave it to me again. I have seen all these photos stolen and put up on numerous blogs and not giving credit where it's due. To me these pics are precious and personal and to have them all over like that without credits and names bothers me. This has happened to me where a friend copies one of my personal pics and it ends up out in cyberspace. I recently sent the link to some of these pages and asked them to please give credits. I am on this site too (have a pic of me at the breakwater in 1976 or so) this was a big part of our lives back then. It was bohemian Venice when rents were cheap and we saw friends all of the time on the daily. It doesn't have the same feel and are bit lost when I walk down there now, unless there is a gathering and I feel grounded once again, if only for a moment. I hope this site is always here for me to go back to. Thanks for the memories.

Saw Randy Wright at his shop years ago and invited him up to my area to get waves...remember fishing on the breakwater with kelly and whipple. mahoney,diver dan, john pastana suntan dan, lars johnson,all of them hated fish surfboards back then my bro and i were the first to surf em at the breakwater and did we get shit...within 6 months almost everyone started riding em.. except for the Urbany crew... if anyone wants to contact me im at sagelove@pacbell.net. peace.

Well, not much actually.... "Guest's" enigmatic question below was actually the first comment in several weeks. Pbase was down for a while there and when they resumed they never got the counters (which you guys can't see) working properly..... and I was beginning to wonder if any or all comments were being posted during the last few weeks. Ray (as you can see below) managed to attach a shot of himself; something which I had thought was no longer possible (see the explanation on page top) but I haven't had the time to try to figure out exactly what code he used to do that. The galleries seem to still be working properly. Pbase is exceedingly inexpensive, and the pages always look nice and uncluttered so I'm not inclined to complain when they don't deliver absolute perfection.... Otherwise..... what IS going on????

I was not a local, local, ...but my dad lived close enough for me to ride my bike to the beach everyday. I too remember getting felafel and a vegetarian sandwich at the local health food store. Walking around and always running into a friend. I can relate so much to the last post. I miss it too.
