I am John Howard, Specialist 4 and I too served with the 41st IPSD Scout Dog Platoon at Lai Khe basecamp from April 1969 to March 1970. The proud members I served with was SFC Slattery, Sgt. Foster, Marsh, McEcharen, Hill, Booher, Sgt. Cyree, Brothers, Moen, Sgt. O'Grady, Mays our staff vet George Deitrict. I am saddened to say George was killed in action in April of 69 not to long after I was assigned to the unit. My protector Scout Dogs name was Concho. Not a very large Black and white German Shephard but very good at his job. He saved my life a few times by throwing alerts when he sensed something. I think about the men I served with in the 41st and wonder what they are doing today and proud to have served with them. A few names I failed to list are Auth, Ingram, Staub and Miller.

I transferred from 49th IPSD to the 41st IPSD in April. 1967. My dog was King 58X3. We were based at Phouc Vinh. I also spent a little time at Lai Khe in the Michelin rubber plantation. CO was 1LT Gravelle. Platoon clerk was Tom Watson. Vet Tech was a mountain of a man we called "Smitty". Cant remember his real name but obviously his last name was Smith. For some reason, my recollection of names is very limited. Don't know why but things still come back in bits and pieces.

In August I was asked to volunteer for a request from "higher authorities" for a "Top Secret" mission somewhere up North. Against my better judgement I said yes. It turned out to be an assignment to SOG/Special Forces "Spike Team Idaho", a squad of 3 Special Forces men, 8 indigenous troops, and King and myself. Our primary missions were to run 5 day recons into Laos and the Ho Chi Minh trail. We went in "sterile", no dog Tags, no labels on our fatigues, and no items of identification. We were at FOB # 1 at Phu Bai just south of Hue.We flew to Khe Sanh for our final briefings. That place was unreal. Hats off to the brave men who served there.
I had a Top Secret clearance from my time at OCS before I dropped out. I was on Team Idaho until late November when I returned to the 41st to turn King over to a new handler and go back to civilization. That was the hardest thing of my entire tour over there. How do you part with the best friend you've ever had or wiil have. A day doesn't go by that I don't think of King. I owe my life and many others owe their lives to him. I learned a few years ago that King was KIA in Dec. 1968, a year after I left him. I have some pictures of my time with the 41st and with Team Idaho. I will try to post them here.

Thanks to all you wonderful Handlers and your heroic Scout Dog companions for your service to our Country and to those who never came back. God bless you all !

REPORTING IN: Former CO, 1LT Ron Marks, 41st IPSD. I have many memories of those days in Quon Loi and Lai Khe, RVN. Our amazing dog teams supported the 1st Brigade and on occasion, the 2nd Brigade. Our primary support was for the 1/2, 1/26, 1/28 and 2/28. Our platoon comprised nothing short of an endless stream of professionals, all of who were dedicated to their job, mission and best friend-their dogs. During my tenure from 9/68-9/69, I was blessed with a number of dedicated men. Time and age have distanced us all from that unique time in our lives. Accordingly, much of what transpired then and many of the heroes who proudly wore the patch of the 41st have become faded memories. However, I still have fond memories of the tireless efforts our handlers made to support the Big Red One.

I'll try to recollect some of the names of those fearless lads who, without hesitation put their lives and that of their beloved team partners on the line countless times. The scout dog teams of the 41st were a special relationship that grew from a bond between man and dog. Their love and appreciation for each other molded them into highly trained assets. Their expertise and devotion to duty saved the lives of many men who patrolled the jungles of South Vietnam. Our scout dog teams provided a distinct advantage over the enemy in direct support of numerous ground units operating in the 1st Division's area of operation. God bless them all.

Many of the proud members of the 41st I still remember:
SFC Rodriquez, SFC Slattery, SFC Grimes, SSG Townsend, SGT Foster, SGT Stanley, SGT Daniels, SGT Russell, SGT O'Grady, SGT Brino, George Deitrict, Marsh, McEcharen, Smith, Hill, Booher, Cyree, Brothers, Ashby, Kunneth, Lubbers, Moen, Noe, Podany, Stout, Wadsworth. I still have vivid memories of several additional faces. Unfortunately, their names now escape me.

I served in viet nam with 41st IPSD, 1968, 1969. The name I was known by is "kid Miron", my dogs name was Rebel. How do I contact my old friends? How can I e-mail them to catch up on old time? Is there a reunion I could attend to see them? Can any body help me??? My e-mail is jmiron110@comcast.net

I served with Alan MacDonald Sturdy Feb-late April 1966. We were in 3rd platoon, D-3-3 Basic training Comany Fort Ord, CA.
I was saddened to see that his name is listed on the Viet Nam Wall.
He was a fine soldier. He will not be forgotten....
