Dating back from the Roman conquest times, it was in the 15th century that Sagres achieved great importance.

The frequent presence of Prince henry the Navigator during the first days of Atlantic navigation and the Discovery of the African coast as far as the Gulf of Guinea has forever linked this picturesque fishing port with the Discoveries.

On Ponta de Sagres, a giant finger of rock pointing to the ocean, stand the buildings which evoke the past of a place that is part of the history of the world, remembering the Vila and the defensive fortress founded by Henry the Navigator.

Nearby, at one of the most westerly points of the european continent (after cabo da Roca), is the cape of S. Vicente (a sacred place for the Roman's that named it Promontorium Sacrum) opening on to a vast horizon of sea and sky.

Das schon vor der Besetzung durch die Römer gegründete Sagres gelangte im 15. Jahrhundert zu grossem Ruhm.

Die häufige Anwesenheit des Infanten D. Henrique zu Beginn der Schiffsfahrten über den Atlantik und der Entdeckung der afrikanischen Küste bis zum Golf von Guinea verbindet den Namen dieses einfachen Fischerhafens auf immer mit den Entdeckungen.

Auf dem wie ein mächtiger Finger ins Meer ragenden Felsvorsprung Ponta de Sagres erinnern noch einige Gebäude, darunter die von Heinrich dem Seefahrer gegründete Festung und sein Haus, an die Vergangenheit dieses Ortes, der Weltgeschichte geschrieben hat.

In der Nähe liegt das Kap S. Vicente oder - wie die Römer es nannten - Promontorium Sacrum, der südwestlichste Punkt des europäischen Festlandes, von dem man bis zum Horizont blickt, an dem Himmel und Meer zu verschmelzen scheinen.

Com origem anterior à conquista romana, foi no séc. XV que Sagres ganhou grande importância.

A presença frequente do Infante D. Henrique, durante o início da navegação atlântica e da descoberta da costa africana até ao Golfo da Guiné associou para sempre este simples porto de pesca aos Descobrimentos.

Na Ponta de Sagres, gigantesco dedo de pedra apontando para o Oceano, algumas edificações evocam ainda o passado deste local que faz parte da história do mundo, lembrando a Vila do Infante e a fortaleza que a protegia, fundadas pelo Infante D. Henrique.

Perto, no extremo sudoeste do continente europeu, fica o Cabo de S. Vicente (Promontorium Sacrum dos Romanos), onde se abre um vasto horizonte de céu e mar.
