A local clone of Coney Island, the now three-kilometre-long Sunnyside amusement park opened in 1922. Unfortunately, when Lake Shore Boulevard was widened in 1956, the park lost a roller coaster and the rest of the midway (a merry-go-round was sold to Disneyland). Thankfully, the Palais Royale survived the purge and is still open and operational (Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie have all graced its stage). The Sunnyside Bathing Pavilion, with its spectacular arches and columns, is the other expressway survivor; the café within provides people-watching opportunities galore. The pavilion was declared a historic site in 1975, underwent a partial refurbishment and renovation, and today is a popular backdrop for movies and weddings.
