Disaster Strikes

Sanibel Causeway, Florida

A sad story accompanies this image. This is one of a pair of Osprey that I watched for several days while they were building a nest in the trees that can be seen in the background. Osprey nests are very large, made from big sticks, and are very heavy. Many nests are build on solid structures that are man-made. This pair had a nest partially built when a heavy wind caused the trees to sway and the nest was not supported enough to withstand the forces. The nest came crashing down. For several days after this disaster, the pair made half-hearted attempts to start building again, but finally abandoned the site, likely not to breed this season.
