Ephesus - The Aegean

Truly one of the great ruined cities of the western world. Ephesus was inhabited as early as 1000BC by the Greeks. The present day ruins are from the 4th Century BC Hellenistic city founded by Lysinachus, one of Alexander The Great's successors. Among the gems inside Ephesus are the House Of Soccrates and The Library Of Celsus (one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of The World).

Other highlights is The Great Theatre with a seating capacity of 25000 built by Emperor Claudius (41-54AD) and Emperor Trajanus (98-117AD), The Arcadian Way (or Harbour Street) - from where the term "Shopping Arcade" originated from as shops lined both sides of the Arcadian Way in the ancient days, The Temple Of Hadrian (Dedicated to Emperor Hadrian), The Fountain Of Trajan (dedicated to Emperor Trajan), The Temple Of Domitian and The Odeon.

Perched up high on hill near Ephesus is the House Of The Virgin Mary. Popular legend tells of how she and St John arrived in Ephesus from Jerusalem in 37AD and that she lived out her years in this small house. The House Of The Virgin Mary is now a scared place of pilgrimage for both Christians and Muslims.

Very nice photos. I am traveling to Turkey in November (5 days) then again next year with a tour group for 10 days and am looking forward to seeing the sights you have captured with your camera.
