Katyn, a small village in Russia was a scene of horrific crime committed by Sovites during World War II. Several thousands of Polish officers have been executed in a forest near Katyn. They were shot with a gun in the back of their heads. The officers had been captured during the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. The execution was a part of systematic atrocities and crimes committed by Soviet army on Polish citizens. Only in 1989 the Soviets admitted that Stalin had ordered the massacre. Before that time they were trying to blame German troops for this crime.
The memorial was designed by Polish sculptor, Andrzej Pitynski, and dedicated on November 19th, 2000. Polish community in the US had collected money to fund this memorial, which became a landmark of Baltimore. It is located at Katyn Circle (intersection of President St. & Aliceanna St.).
