Running about 130 miles from US Hwy 50 just west of Gunnison to US Hwy 160 about 15 miles west of
Del Norte, Colorado's Hwy 149 is one of the best back roads I've ever driven. The road makes its
way over the Slumgullion Pass at 11361 feet, runs through the Rio Grande National Forest and
alongside the headwaters of the Rio Grande River. The largest towns along the route are Lake City and Creede, each of which have a population of about 400.
