Herring Gulp

Prince of Wales Island, AK
These two whales were corralling a school of herring by diving in a large circle and blowing bubbles. The cylindrical screen of bubbles keeps the bait fish from exiting the small area. The whales then dive below the screen and swim straight up with mouths open taking in a few hundred pounds of herring in the process. In this photo from a great distance away they are just breaking water and swallowing their catch.
