Firefighter Memorial in Capitol Park A close-up of the Firefighter Memorial Names of some Firefighters Killed on Duty. Note the attached photograph of John Eric Schmidt - LA. Plaque states that the Grove of Trees was planted in honor of Union veterans in 1897 using saplings from a southern battlefield.
Bell Bell - U.S.S. California' We have now left Capitol Park and are at the entrance to Sutter's Fort. Gold was found here in the 1840s - Gold Rush Inside Sutter's Fort, a place I have wanted to see for many years. Yep, I arrive at the same time as a 5th grade field trip...
This plaque contains a likeness of John Augustus Sutter & honors the centeniall of the founding of the fort. Central area of Sutter's Fort Another view... This building contained John Sutter's parlor, office, and a doctor's office. This is where the 1st gold discovered was weighed.
Each small room along this building served a different purpose. Entrances to some of the surrounding rooms... Some students peering in to look at Patty Reed's Doll. Patty Reed's Doll is a state treasure. As a young girl traveling w/ the Donner Party, she carried the doll to California.
The doll is tiny..click on the photo to see more detaill. This is how folks staying at the fort would have lived. Woodworking shop... Guest Room - The bed doesn't look too comfy, does it ? See the chamber pot?
A typical loom to make cloth The Gunsmith Shop where weapons are repaired and stored. Blacksmith Shop where wagon wheels were repaired and tools and utensils forged. Lots of scales - some may have been used to weigh gold.
Outdoor fire pit... Carriages are stored here. Notice the grass growing on the roof of this building. Time to leave...I wonder what the members of the Donner Party thought when they finally were rescued and arrived here?
