Junipero Serra’s Indian Reliquary
This reliquary, traditionally assumed to have been made for Junipero Serra by an Indian craftsman, has a faded, barely decipherable description of its contents on the reverse side, which a court certified documents and handwriting expert verified was written by Serra. Bordered in front with carved wheat and grapes representing the bread and wine of the Eucharist, the relics under glass are:
1) wax Agus Dei Sacramental of Our Lady of the Rosary, from the pontificate of Pius VI(1775-99)
2) bone, habit and wood from the grave of Saint Francis Solano, Apostle of South America, and Serra’s favorite saint (large cross), and bone and wood from the grave of Saint Rose of Lima, Patroness of South America(small cross)
3)purpura(scarlet red cardinal’s cloth) relic of Saint Charles Borromeo, namesake of this mission, within decorative carved church and cardinal's hat
4)bones of early Christian martyrs set in wax
