Altough the subject is very static in the frame, the play of light and shadow brings it to life. To make it more dynamic, this should have been horizontally framed, with more blue off to the right hand side of the picture and the subject out of the center. Once you begin to place your subjects off center, instead of in the middle of your frame, you will see them begin to work with their backgrounds more effectively.
