Roses

I've ended up taking so many photos of roses in my backyard, around the neighborhood, various public gardens, etc., that I thought they should have their own section.

The white Lady Banks rose was pruned back severely a year or two after these photos were taken. I guess the owners were worried that it was overwhelming the chinaberry tree next to it. The rose didn't seem to notice.

'Cécile Brünner' and the big pink roses by the back entrance are also gone now. Cécile had gotten very overgrown and I'm guessing that she might have become a safety hazard by making it difficult for cars and pedestrians using that entrance to see each other. The pink roses by the gate died when our aging sprinkler system gave out during a particularly nasty heat wave awhile back.

'Pink Flower Carpet' couldn't take the heat and died the year after I took the photos. I understand the breeder has developed a more heat resistant version.

'Yellow Flower Carpet' and 'Marie Pavié' are doing just fine and 'Old Blush' is, as usual, trying to devour the whole backyard all by herself. I think the jasmine vine may give her some competition though.

'Old Blush' finally died during the heat wave/drought of 2011. If she'd been in the ground, she probably would've hung on, but I don't have any ground here to put her in, so she was in a big pot which probably allowed her roots to cook. I love roses, but I just don't have a good place for them here, especially not great big bushes like that one.
