Smith Bridge was originally built in 1839 as a covered, one-lane wooden span over the Brandywine just south of the Pennsylvania line. It was destroyed in 1961 when it was set on fire the night before Halloween in 1961. The Delaware Department of Transportation rebuilt the bridge without a cover.
It was an unattractive, concrete bridge.
In 2002, the "new" Smith Bridge, which spans the Brandywine River, was "rebuilt" in the spirit of the original covered bridge at a cost of $1.2 million.
It is still a one-lane bridge.

A coverd bridge...what a great rectangle, along with a few other shapes mixed in. Nice to see the snowy version too and appreicate the info...lots of dedicated people to organize this reconstruction.
I think Phil's finally cracked...great shot Stephanie, the red-orange of the bridge is a lovely splash of colour in the bleak PA winter...I bet it blends in beautifully in the autumn :o)
Nice pre-snow Wyeth Country image. This was built since I was in the area. Had to look up where it is, just south of Chadds Ford between the 100 and 202. Look forward to seeing more Wyeth Country images. How about the Brandywine River Museum or some of the old houses along Baltimore Pike? :)
That sneaky rectangular bridge is trying to hide some triangles and a bit of a circle from us - but we're all so shape-centric this month that it has no chance of keeping them secret!! What was it thinking??!! :o)
