Melbourne's Street and Contemporary Art

The street art, so-called, of Melbourne's city centre and inner suburban laneways, has become a tourist attraction even as local authorities and police - and property owners - continue to hunt down the furtive types who 'tag' on fences, walls and railway embankments. Street art changes by the day; when I first posted this gallery, an impromptu memorial had just sprung up in Hosier Lane to honour the memory of a woman murdered a few days earlier. More recently, we took a walking tour through the CBD laneways and learnt much more about the city's ever-changing contemporary art scene. It's not only the laneways: the many levels of Curtin House and Nicholas House in Swanston Street also host exhibition spaces for emerging artists.

Most recently, the street art concept has given rise to a deliberate adornment of the enormous blank canvasses provided by the facades of high-rise public housing blocks, and of grain silos in otherwise obscure country towns.

Most of these images were taken with Nikon D300 using RAW format, other times with my Samsung mobile, and are available to be licensed for creative (non promotional) use. Copyright generally rests with the original artists.
