Schwerin, an old-world city near the Baltic coast

On a brief visit one autumn afternoon in 2015 we were enchanted by the sleepy little city of Schwerin, once the seat of the dukes of Mecklenburg and more recently marooned inside East Germany. We returned in mid-summer 2017 to spend more time in Germany's smallest state capital, and especially to revisit its fairy-tale Schloss or castle, an 18th-century aristocrat's folly surrounded by lakes and landscaped gardens.
