Mobile mania

In the beginning... savvy travellers took note of the phone booths and call boxes used by local people; you might have to line up alongside them to call home, book a room or confirm an air ticket. Then along came the mobile, a.k.a. cellphone or handphone and as these gadgets spread around the world, a funny thing began to happen. Telecoms companies pitched their prices to match people's ability to pay, wherever they might be, so that people who might never have had access to a fixed line telephone in the home, found themselves able to own a mobile and to stay in touch 24/7. (Travellers, too, found themselves buying local SIM cards or using mobile roaming services so as to stay in the loop). Then along came the 21st century, ushering in 'smartphones', with those versatile little screens that the owners seem to find so much more absorbing than the real world around them...
