La Paz is a one-of-a-kind city, the world's highest national capital. Most of its sprawl nestles in a quebrada or canyon gouged out of the 4000-metre Altiplano or Andean high plains. This geography makes for dramatic vistas but cumbersome transportation networks. An innovative new cable car network began operations in 2014, affording even more dramatic vistas.
Despite the city's uncertain reputation - and the dire warnings of foreign government travel advisories - I encountered no theft, chicanery or petty crime during my stay, although civil unrest west of the city did prevent a planned excursion to Lake Titicaca.
As with my other 2016 Bolivian & Chilean galleries, many of these images were captured on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Other images were taken with Nikon D300 using RAW format, and may be licensed.
