Grasberg, West Papua: a deep pit has replaced a mountain of ore

In the mountains of West Papua, Indonesia, the Ertzberg Mountain discovered by Dutch adventurer Jean-Jacques Douzy in 1936 has been gouged off the map, replaced by a deep pit filled by a pea-soup lake. The Grasberg, another copper mountain, is steadily being replaced by a ghostly step-pyramid.
