Tawang Gompa, India's largest Buddhist monastery, is also one of the largest in all Asia. It was founded in 1680 AD and perches on a ridge at 10,000 ft above sea level. As many as 700 monks can be accommodated, although current residents number some 450. Distinguished visitors have included the Fourteenth (or present) Dalai Lama.
