Hobart, my home town

Hobart’s sandstone walls, its streets and parks still echo with the footsteps of sealers and scientists, whalers and weathermen. With a population of about 185,000 the Tasmanian capital is better known today for its innovative arts and crafts, gourmet produce and maritime lifestyle.

This is one of Australia’s most photogenic cities. The brooding crags of Mount Wellington loom above Salamanca Place, a row of sandstone warehouses from the early days of the colony, still as upright as Governor Arthur’s redcoats. Cargoes of whale oil, grain or wool have been replaced by quarters for creative types. Behind, and uphill, lies the Battery Point district, incorporating the toy-town cottages of Arthur’s Circus.
