Unlike London, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg continues to function as a major trading port. London's shipping has moved well down the Thames, away from the metropolis, but at Hamburg the banks of the Elbe estuary are still lined with freight terminals and docks, as the river flows towards the North Sea. In particular, the 1920s Speicherstadt warehouse district still retains a particular integrity.
