Dresden, the creation of Augustus the Strong, a larger-than-life 18th-century sovereign, was the city laid waste by Allied bombs in the final days of World War Two. Reconstruction of the landmark Frauenkirche or Church of Our Lady was completed in 2005, but work continues still on other heritage sites. From our hotel window, builders could be seen fastening timber slats across the steep-pitched roofs of traditionally-styled residential buildings.
