2004: A visit to Yunnan, southwest China, including a hike where angels fear to tread in Tiger Leaping Gorge; touring the heritage cities of Lijiang and Dali; and a road journey up to the high-altitude ethnic Tibetan region of Zhongdian, the so-called Shangri-La.
2008: An exhausting but exhilarating journey from Shanghai to Beijing across China's heartland, the region drained by the Yellow River. These are the central northern provinces of Henan ('Her-nan', not to be confused with Hunan)and Shanxi (not to be confused with Shaanxi).
2013: Return to China, the first week in the company of my brother, a frequent visitor and active pBase member. From Shanghai we travelled west to the heritage villages of the Hiuzhou region of Anhui province, centred around the city of Huangshan or Tunxi. Read more. Subsequently I flew west across China's heartland to Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan. Read more on my blog.
2014: I joined a small group journeying overland from Beijing to the ancient capital of Xi'an, thence to Xining and on to Lhasa by train, then on across western Tibet, via the northern Everest Base Camp, and so to Kathmandu, Nepal.
2018: Return visit to Yunnan, where so much has changed with the advent of mass domestic tourism across China. Continuing on for a return visit to Tibet "Autonomous Region", where new road and rail infrastructure continues its rapid development.
2019: A brief but absorbing stopover in the former British Colony of Hong Kong.
