On December 12, 1859, the first Train entered Independence. It was a great day for Buchanan County.
The Illinois Central railroad built a new passenger depot in 1891 that was a necessity to help take care of the crowds convening for the races at the local racetrack.
Today, the Illinois Central Depot has been restored and relocated along highway 150 in Independence and serves as the home for Buchanan County Tourism.
On display behind the Depot is former Grand Trunk Western Steam Locomotive 8300 disguised as an Illinois Central Locomotive.
I am looking for information about a man who may have worked at a train depot during the 1900's in Independence, Iowa. His name was Owen Bell. Is there any history buff or employee who has any information about him? He may have been a ticket agent possibly. Thanks for anything you can find out for me. I appreciate it!!

i WAS A DEPOT AGENT FOR THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD. I worked at all the depots from Waterloo, Iowa to Dubuque Iowa including the the Dubuque Tower on the mississippi river in Illinois. I am now 81 years old. Yesterday I found a Central Scientific Co. key board exactly like I used at all lthe Depots I worked in. I have hunderds of storys about my railroad days, I have looked for a key board for years. I almost think it is the one I used.
