Winston Tunnel Fanhouse Destroyed

Jo Davies County, Illinois

This was the scene after the DNR Bulldozer had done its dirty work. The Fanhouse had stood since 1913. It had survived after the 1950s when the CGW converted to diesel-electric Locomotives and closed the facility. The Fan and nozzle were removed and the building stripped bare, but it still stood. It even out lasted the Chicago Great Western Railroad, after it merged with the Chicago & North Western Railroad. It stood to see the last train come and go forever on October 31, 1971. The end of the line was less than a year away when the road from Galena Junction to Byron, Illinois was abandoned in torn up for scrap. But Still the Fanhouse held firm. Then on a cold morning in early 2007 the distant sounds of Machinery would draw nearer and nearer until finally the time had come and the 2 story brick and cinder block building was torn down.
As you can see all that remains is a large pile of bricks and debris.
Was the IDNR justified in tearing down the building? Was she really a hazard to visitors? Or had they just destroyed what the people were coming to see?

Is anything left besides the tunnel? I was planning on heading out there this summer to see the fan house and tunnel attendant buildings so I am dissappointed to see they are demolishing everything. Too bad the structure couldn't have been repaired.

Completely unjustified, I agree. They tore down an important piece of railroad heritage, and a piece of the old Chicago Great Western has now been lost forever.

I too hated to see the Fanhouse go the way it did, but the reality was that it was so neglected and decrepit that a large sneeze may have toppled it. I had always thought that it would have been brought down by a large storm, not by the hands of the DNR.
On the positive side though, we should be grateful that people throughout the years at least had the foresight to take pictures of it from it's construction and up to it's end. Many other unusual and/or interesting places in the world have not had this done, which is a pitiful shame.

was there several years ago took many pictures just like yours have a brick in my trainroom. I liked the land up there so much I bought property in Jo Daviess county. the museum in Elizabeth is great. I can't wait until they extend the galena trail on the great western right of way to rice in a few years.
