On December 14, 2006 the Northern Lights were bright enough to be seen from the Northern Illinois Area. This is not common in these parts and only happens when a coronal mass ejection happens.
This process can cause particularly strong aurora also known as the Northern Lights (in the Northern Hemisphere) and the Southern Lights (in the Southern Hemisphere)
