Newcastle Castle was originally a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose. In 1168, King Henry II founded the stone keep and bailey castle, when adding a five storey stone keep, to the encasing timber palisade. In 1247, a stone curtain wall, flanked by the Bailey Gate, gatehouse and the Black Gate, barbican replaced the timber palisade.
