... Killed for the Ivory Tusks ...

Kenya

... taken in the Tsavo National Park in East Africa in summer of 1971. You can see where the tusks were removed after the elephant had been slain. Also of note is the color ... there wasn't any! When we were there, the plains had been in a severe drought for some time and EVERYTHING was this color.

:(
this has been one of the enduring tragedies of africa, and mankind's
greed and disregard for nature and wildlife. not only elephant, but also
rhino and gorillas are severely affected by the callousness of poachers.
may we live to see a better world, a world in which people show that they
have learnt from the mistakes of the past.

Wow! This must have been a terrible site to see in person. It certainly looks horrible through your excellent photograph.

Breaks my heart! These are my favorite animal and such a special animal, that has best friends, keeps memories of dead friends and relatives and is now known to communicate with herds that are miles and miles away. If we lose them, we are surely lost too. V

As human beings we think we are at the top of the heap.......I sometimes wonder, as we have a seemingly infinite capacity to do damage where ever we go. I hope we never make it to the stars!!

Top Right Corner... Is there another elephant?

Elephants have good memory. I met a couple of elephants at an animal refugee at Cambodia. The younger ones where nice to people, but the oldest one, he really hated people and he had to be surrounded by a fence to avoid him to hit people. I assume he had many bad memories about people doing bad to his fellows many years ago.

It's just as sad today. Now climate change and land development have joined poaching as lethal threats to the elephants. The color really is being sucked out Africa. It's a very moving photo.
