Military Police Patrol Boat ...

Vietnam

... this is the Saigon River, a major waterway. The Patrol Boats were high speed and heavily armed, carrying a 50-cal machine gun in the bow and a 30-cal in the rear. It was crewed by five Military Policemen ................. was also great for water-skiing (which we used to do).

I was with the 458th PBR company in 1970. Each PBR was crewed by five crew members. 1 MP, 1 Quan Cat, 1 Quan Can, 1 engine mechanic, and 1 Coxswain. A US Military Policeman, Vietnam Military Policeman, and a Vietnamese Civilian Policeman on board gave us complete Jurisdiction over the entire river.

Also, the Army PBR's did not come into country until 68. They were all MKII units
The 458th had only 39 Boats with 3 more made in 69/70 but never made it over the pond.
Those three (3) were all used stateside in various security projects. One of those projects was
located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. None of the PBR's belonged to the MP's. All were TOE to the 458th.

Tom Briggs...The Statements made above are not true. I was a enlisted boat captain out of Cat Lo.
No one who served under the 18th MP were awarded the CIB. This was only given Infantry otherwise know as 11Bravo's types. There were exceptions but PBR was not one of them.

Max, thanks for the visit and comment and you are both correct and incorrect. We did use Boston Whalers as you indicated but the 92d MP Battalion also had several PBR's which were used to patrol the river from Vung Tau up to Saigon. One of the incongruities of the war was that often the PBR would come under fire and non-MP crew would receive the CIB. You'll recall that there was an infantry company assigned to the 92d and if one of their members was on board, they received the Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). Thanks for you service, Max
