Tom,
When I was stationed at Ft. Ord in the early '80s my Chief in the OR was a LTC who was stationed as a nurse in Saigon in '67-'68 when I was there with the Infantry. The stories she told about going boating on the Saigon River and being squired around by higher ranking officers including "Holly", whom I knew only as Danger Seven-Six (BG Hollingsworth, Assistant Commander in the BRO), made my head spin. I kept asking her "Colonel, was this the same Vietnam I was in? Little people with ice-cream cone hats and automatic weapons?"
One of my favorite stories involved her having to be restrained when Tet broke out because she thought it would be a good time to pick up bargains in Cholon. She was serious. I'm sure there were some fire sales, but no bargains for Americans.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences and memories. Best regards.
