Beer "33"

... also known as Beer LaRue, this is something that all Vietnam veterans will recall. An interesting fact about Beer "33" was that it used formaldehyde in its brewing process (which led to the obvious joke that one could get embalmed on a night on the town).

For a good laugh, see Dave Berry's comment below ...

Back in about '96 or so, a bunch of friends got together on Vet's Day in Denver - I'd dropped off some 33, San Miguel, La Rhue, and Singh Ha at our watering hole, and told 'em... "no matter what somebody orders, bring 'em out in that order" - lots of laughs and a few wet eyes... It was a great evening.

We used to drink "33" on the patio of the Continental Palace is Lom Song Square and talk to all the news journalist.....Beer is beer and if cold it was acceptable.....I liked the Singha stuff from Thailand better....but again, beer is beer....

I remember drinking cold "Ba Moui Ba" , 33 beer on the roof of the International Hotel,
watching a James Bond movie and hearing a B-52 strike about 30 miles north of Saigon in November of 1965.

Vietnam now exports Ba mui ba (33) but it is labeled 333, an extra 3. I bought a case of it in Hawaii for old times sake.

I just returned from a month in Vietnam. So much has changed in Saigon (including the name) since I was there with the 716th MP Bn. in '71-72. Beer "33" is now Beer "333".

Sometimes that was all we could get and I have been know to drank a few. When you open one blue smoke would come out of the beer. Most of the time we had to drink it hot because there was no ice. Every once and a while one of the kids would come out to our bunker with some ice to sell us. That really made it good.

I did try it and it would gag a maggot. It was called "bomb de bomb" by my group of friends at Pershing Field in 1966. Thanks Magor Briggs.

The story I heard was that the government sent a sample of Ba Moui Ba (33) beer to a lab for testing. The report came back "Your water buffalo has diabetes".

I never touched the stuff. Brown Derby and Ballentines American beers were bad enough.

LOL! Yeah, coming home dead drunk doesn't sound like a good thing. Good to know the story behind it.

The vets who drank this stuff must have well preserved bodies. Very nicely captured with excellent details, colors, and textures. Excellent scanning job. V

I'm tempted to say interesting times but I'm not sure that "interesting" is quite the right word? :)
