US Embassy Annex

Vietnam

This was the original American Embassy on Ham Nghi Blvd and served as the headquarters for the US Ambasador until the new Embassy compound on Thong Nhut opened in Sep 1967, after which this building became the US Embassy Annex.

This building (then the Embassy) was car-bombed in 1965. The fortifications you see were designed to prevent/deter another attack.

I arrived in Saigon on March 15th 1965 and on the 30th, the embassy annex was bombed.
I took this same photo , only all the windows have been blown out .

Tom, Thanks for sharing these photos and your memories. I served with the US Army Security Agency’s 3rd Radio Research Unit from May 1961 to July 1963, before the fortifications became necessary. My then fiancé and I visited the Consular Office at this Embassy several times in 1962-63. We remain grateful to the Vice-Consul, Kenneth Rogers, a kind and gracious man, for expertly guiding us through the U.S. Army’s intricate procedures governing a service member’s marriage to a foreign national and the Republic of Vietnam and United States visa formalities.
