November 8th - Cutting Soap

We got home and Cathi made a bee line for the soap molds with her cutter.
Now it sits and cures for a few weeks, the individual bars drying and firming up.
She made two flavors yesterday, and she's planning a few more in preparation for Christmas.

For yesterday's picture I used available light, tonight we got home after dark so I drug the lightbox in.
I think the shot turned out better. Too bad I was on auto focus, the back wall's sharper than Cathi is.
I should just not use the damned thing, whenever I do I'm unhappy with the results!

Yes, it can be changed. I just don't use the damned thing often enough to learn it and remember it. I'm so used to manual focus in my everyday work that I just do it by hand on my Rebel, too. Then I do like tonight and goof it up!

Yes lye is used in making the soap. Cathi always has plenty of protection and the kitchen smells like vinegar (it neutralizes the caustic action) when she makes soap. But she loves doing it! "And it's great soap!" she says over my shoulder...

Hey, Todd, can't you change the auto focus point on the rebel? You should probably be able to move the point left/right/up/down, so your subject doesn't have to be centered to use the auto focus. Just a thought.

Nice shot - looks like a labor of love for Cathi! Isn't lye used in soap making? Or am I imagining things? I noticed she was wearing goggles yesterday, and wondered why.
