Nikon D200 Portraits

My daughter is getting ready for her senior year of high school...thus, senior photos. We decided that I'd give it a try, although I really don't know much about portrait photography. She's a willing model and has fun being my guinea pig - with the money I am going to save, I was able to justify the D200 ;)

Most of these were taken outside with just natural light using a 50mm 1.8 lens. A few of the photos were taken in my garage, lit by one softbox and various colors of sheets for backdrops. A really simple set up. I have a lot to learn about lighting. I definitely need more, but I'm not sure what yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated....

So far nothing taken in RAW...just playing with JPEG for the moment for quick processing. All of these shots were done using spot meter on the face. I also have the camera set to a bit more saturation as recommended by Ken Rockwell on his site. Most of my images are coming out of the camera more underexposed than I'd like, because I'm nervous about blowing the highlights. I have to give the exposure a boost in Photoshop.

With the help of friends and neighbors, I'll hopefully get some practice and see some improvement in the next few weeks!

I'm interested in doing more portrature, and a friend wants me to do her son's senior photos soon. Your experience and the results here are great! They give me some inspiration and hope that I might be able to some at least half as well as you!

You say you have a lot to learn about lighting, but my opinion is that you're well ahead of many. Have you considered, especially for this kind of portrait, using a reflector instead of the flash? Photo 6, for example, shows a bit of a blue tint on Lindsey's face while the rest (left cheek, hair, etc.) is more toward gold.

Didn't anybody get the memo? Scott and Linds are not supposed to get any older than the little girl with the pigtails and the little boy in the green sweater!!! We simply cannot tolerate any of this growing up nonsense! But I guess we have to:)
