I think you saw a broad-headed skink! They can grow up to 13 inches and look much like a four legged snake! HA! Look under Lizards/Texas, a sight will come up to show the native skinks/lizards/snakes of Texas and you will see the red-head skink. Hope this helps.

After reading that the stripes disappear on skinks after maturity, it is possible that the 'red headed lizard' I saw was a mature male five lined skink without the stripes. I'd love to see a picture of the skink after it has lost it's stripes during mating season.

I have a new lizard in my back yard (Clear Lake area) that looks like an overgrown anatole. Same basic shape, but has a ridge on its back and an odd looking tail. Could it be an anatole mutation of some sort?

ps What I saw was definitely NOT the ground skink pictured since it had no sharp contrasts in it's markings, but blended from the head to the darker body.Marshall

I observed a similar red headed lizard in Orange in the afternoon. It was larger than the typical Anole with a more uniform body width for it's entire length. It's head shape was typical of the Anole. It's body was a darker redish brown and was slightly flatter than the Anole and I would estimate it to have about 4 times the body weight. It was NOT scaly or marked in appearance like the rose-bellied lizard.

We just moved to the Kingwood area (Houston) and saw a lizard in the garage with a very red head. I cant find a photo of it. Anyone know what it is?

tom my son found a lizard on the 14 of may it is transparent has a inlarg tail at the end. We have it in a live cage. It dosent look like any lizards around here. Maybe someone let him go. If you can help with the identy of it please help.

Lindi, I just found our guy, look up Ground Skink on Google and seeif that is not what you have. It is definitely what we have here.

We seem to have a family of the same lizards here in the Woodlands,TX that Lindi has in East TX. We live along Spring Creek and have some of the most diversified wildlife that I have ever seen. I found a similar lizard on an Australian website, but can't seem to find any official Texas species named. Does anyone know of this species, or its name?

I live in East Texas and lifted up my childs small plastic pool and found what I thought was a baby snake. It is shinny brown but at I lifted it up it had legs. I have it with me and can get a picture of it. I don' really know if it's a lizard or salamander...but it looks like a small snake with legs. I know these don't exist any more, but I have a picture if you'd like to see it. I'm very interested to see what you think it is.

I found a Big lizard at my place in Caddo Mills, Tx. Someone told me it is a Skink. Has anyone got a picture of it? Mine was about 8" or 10" long, was black with 4 brown stripes from the head to the tail, one on the top, the sides and the bottom. Slimy looking like a snake. Maybe an inch and a half around. The ones I've seen in the dictionary aren't as big as this one was. I've lived in and all around Texas and have never in my 64 years of living in Texas ever seen or heard of these things. I would love to have a picture so I could show others that haven't seen one. Thanks

We found a lizard on top of our house that resembled an iguana had spikes down its spine to it tail, orange eyes, and it was about 12 to 15 inches long. Still dont have any idea what it is!?

found a lizard in my bathroom that strongly resembled an gila momster bui it was only about 4 inches long. The body was about one and a half inches and had the shape and head of the gila but the tail was about 2 & 1/2 inches; very narrow and banded by very bright white and black rings. Does ANYONE have a clue as to what this thing was?

I am constantly getting lizards in my house (Dallas, Texas). They range from 4" - 8" (head to tail). I just caught an 8" lizard in my infact daughter's room. Do these bite? What can I do to keep them out of the house?

I found a little 1.5 inch pink and green lizard with bands on its tail on my glue trap by my front door (near Boerne). I don't know what kind it is (Sounds like the ones mentioned in the last few posts. I managed to get it off the trap alive, but I don't know what it should eat. It must have followed insects into the house and onto the trap. I would like to put some insects into the shoe box with it while it recovers, but I don't want to put something with it that will hurt it. Any suggestions?

Just lately we have a new critter around our house. It is a peach or light rose color, almost translucent with light grayish bands around its tail. It is small, only about 4 inches in length. Anyone know what this might be?

Mary-i think i have the same thing as you in my house too. I have found 2 small ones in the house in the last few weeks and killed both since they were crawing around my house. I have one in a clear baggy but its too small to take a picture. I was goign to take it to a shop to see what it was.

We found a very tiny lizard. It is an inch and maybe half long the body of it is tan colored it's back is spotted (black spots) and the tail is striped (black stripes) above it's eyes are green. What kind of lizard is this and how to we care for it?

I'm wondering if there are any yellowish/white house geckos in Houston? The ones come inside and make a mess? You guys seem quite knowledgable! I'll check back later to see. I was looking for a house in Katy and was curious what kind of lizards are there. I'm going to come clean - I've got a phobia. The ones you have shown - the outside brownish ones are OK - it's the white/yellow sticky footed house geckos that really, sadly, scare me to death.

I found a type of anole- not an anolis carolinis- the greenish brown one ( crw_7389_RT16.tif) but one of similar build. Oddly enough I found it three times at night so I'm assuming it's a nocturnal lizard. It cannot change from brown, has very bulgy eyes and a small but marvelously strawberry-red dewflap with shades of yellow. I've found it always on the same plant- a type of dragon tree. It is very aggressive and has a deeper brown wave pattern traversing down on both sides of it's spine. I have been trying to identify it but have come up with nothing. It's a beautiful lizard.

It is a green anole "Anolis Carolinensis"(they change colors) green, brown, yellow.... Only when they feel threated. They are very safe my 7 & 4 year olds play with them daily.
even a bite though very very unlikely is nothing more than a pinch.
