Arachnids - Arachnida

Spiders in North America, with just a few exceptions are harmless to humans. The Widows, Recluse, and Hobo Spiders are the only real dangerous North American spiders. All spiders have some venom, used in killing their insect prey. They only bite if they feel trapped, or if someone is playing with the spider. In most cases, a bite is no worse than a bee sting.

I have been trying to identify a spider I took a picture of while on holiday in Turkey but have had no success.. maybe you can help. It is turquoise and black on colour with striped legs and ornate patterned body, it was about 5 inches accross from tip to tip and has a 1.5 inch body length. hope you can help. thanks.. Phil.

when i was out in my back yard,i saw a black spider with white stripes on the butt.it was on the swinget on the slide.what kind of spider was it?its in iowa,and is it dangorise? what should i do with it?

I was on a vacation in coco beach florida and i came across a spider.It was about 5 inches wide and 3 inches long, not including the legs. It was mohogany in color and shaped like a crab. It was in a web that was about 5, maybe 6 feet long and 4 feet tall. It had 4, maybe 6 eyes in rows on the top of his head. It had spikes all along it's side. It really looked cool and I would really like to know what it was.

Tom, There's a super large crazy nocturnal land spider in Southmost TX. So scittish wonder how it can be IDed. Get nightmares from it. Saw it when living in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, MX. My Fav. is the bold Jumper. Mike Quinn scientist from Austin would have good pics. mike.quinn@tpwd.state.TX.US

I was wondering if you can help me identify a spider i found on my deck. It has a black body, long legs, and bright yellow spots on its back, at least 2 sets of 2 each, one set larger than the other. Is it dangerous?

I was out reseeding my lawn and got distracted by a spider on my front door. One that I have never seen before. I took a few pictures of it, but my husband and I were so nervous about what it could possibly do to our young children that we killed it.(Sorry) It had a sac that was about the size of a ping pong ball. also, it was a color that I had never seen before as a spider. I would like to have this spider identified so I can know more about it because there maybe babies near by. (I live in Western New York, USA)

I was out with my girl scout troop and we saw a red spider. The spider had a black and white spotted abdomen. The bottom of his legs also looked a little white and black. We notice that it looked that it had about 6 eyes. Four in the center and 1 on each side of the head. They really would like to know what it was. We were in eastern PA.

I found a spider that was about the size of a silver dollar, was shiny black, oblong shape, with a bright lime green oblong shape in the center. Its web was not much, but what was there was black and very sticky. What is this? I live in NY and have never seen one like this before.

ok.. i found a spider in my sister's back yard.. it's big as a dime and it's black and it had white dots on it's butt.. i don't know where to look for it on here.. We live in wisconsin.. i was hopeing that you could help me.. I just want to know because my sister and i both have little girls.. They play out side alot.. so, if you could help that would be wounderful.. thanks..

I found a spider at work and need to find out what kind it is. I would say its about the size of a quarter. It is reddish brown in color and the front part of its body is larger than the end half. The fron half is smooth and a darker reddish brown. The end half looks fury with ridges. I am located in PA but we get shipments in from all over the world. Please help. thank you

i was wondering if someone might be able to help me, i've tried to find this spider on the internet, but i just can't. it's a light brown spider with long skinny legs, probably about 1 1/2 in. long. a semi long thin body that's tiny in comparison to its legs, smaller then my pinkie nail, and it has a dark brown stripe down the middle of it's entire body. it's body shape appears to be rectangular. there's a nest of spiders as well (all the spiders are outside in my backyard) and the spiderlings are white. they almost look like they have a little pearl as their bodies. i do not want to kill them if i don't have to, but i don't know if they are poisonous, and i have two very young children. thanks for any help!

Brenda and Deb, the spider you're describing sounds like the Bold Jumping Spider. http://bugguide.net/node/view/2006 They look nasty, but their venom is only strong enough to kill their insect prey. If one did bite a person, which usually doesn't happen unless the spider is grabbed, it might leave a small welt, about the same as a bee sting.

What is a black furry spider with a white dot on it's back about 1/2 to 3/4" in diameter? I have found two at my house in the last 24 hours and I can't seem to get it identified. It's not any one of these pictured on the website.

I just brought a couple boxes back from a storage locker I had, and although I thought I had cleaned them quite well before bringing in the house, I'm thinking I didn't! I was just in my kitchen, putting dishes in the dishwasher, when I caught a glimpse of what appeared at first to be a tarantula, it was HUGE! I knocked it down, it fell on the floor, and before I gently crushed it, it looked like it had triangular shaped wings, the legs were a kind of blue color, and after I gently crushed it, an odor like play doh emanated from it. The closest pic to it - is the pseudoscorpion - can ANYONE please tell me what the heck this was?

We camped out last night in our backyard (Pennsylvania) only to find this morning nesting on the outside of our tent, but under the top cover was a gigantic spider, black in color, it looked like a Hacklemesh weaver, about 1" long body/head. Do these spiders usually bite, or are they harmless unless provoked ? Needless to say after their first night camping out, and seeing that spider soooo close our girls are not interested in repeating the adventure :) Wonderful pictures you have

we are trying to find out what type of spider bit my wife. it was about the size of a dime, round black body, short stuby legs, covered in a peach fuze type hair and narrow yellow stripes on his back. he moved fast and could jump 2-3 feet. we live in east texas thanks anyone for the help

I have a spider, that we call charlotte, lol, that has had her web by my front door for months, i can't find anywhere on the internet what she is. She has a bubble sack and long legs and on her back, she has a very distinctive Arrow that points towards her head. Can you tell me what she is? im very curious and cant seem to find out what she is.

My husband and I have been online for over an hour trying to determine what kind of spider is building a 4 ft. web in the backyard. We're in Texas near Houston. The spider is about the size of a 50 cent piece with a very distinct chevron with a black star on its abdomen underneath. It looks sort of like a hermit crab and is tan in color. Any ideas?

Okay, Tom, this gallery creeps me out...so I voted for it! I really enjoy the spiders in my garden, many of them enjoy hanging out in my rose blooms. I do not enjoy the Black Widows and I am happy that they hang out way out in back in my storage area. Thank you for sharing your fabulous pictures! Missy
