Hi, I posted a comment under another one of the photos of this spider, it's interesting to me and so I had to share, that our spider as pictured below, is spinning her web near a hummingbird shrub in my flower bed!! so is that what it's preying upon?? oh my, God is so awesome. We found a huge grasshopper trapped in her web last night, this morning she had a new web. It would break my heart if i were to find a hummingbird in the web. My garden has many features to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. I'm afraid of the bite, I got some macro shots of it and those fangs are no joke.

Karen, I also found a hummingbird trapped in the orb weaver's super sticky web. We rescued it and gently pulled away the strands of web. It sat stunned on my palm for about 10 seconds before flying off. It had caught my eye by flapping wildly outside my kitchen window. We have 8-10 orb weavers around the back of our house (one in each rear window.) We love watching them. They are beautiful, we just keep an eye out so that they don't build too close to the bird feeders.

Allergic reactions are nothing to fool around with, whether it be a food allergy, bee sting, spider bite or anything else.
This kind of spider doesn't usually go into houses, but in the fall male wolf spiders and a few other kinds wander in search of females, and often go into houses. Cellar spiders, house spiders, orb weavers, and a couple of the harmful spiders (widows and recluse) often make their webs in and around houses. About all you can do is remove the ones you find in the house.

I hhad to have surgery 2 years ago due to spider bite. Reading the comment about this spiders bite concerns me greatly. I am allergic to many things. This morning I found one of these critters outside my door. Do they of come inside and if so, what is the best course of action to take to discourage their presence or can I?

We got home from work and a female hummingbird was caught in this spider's sticky web. I thought one leg was completely severe and the other, her foot. One wing was bound; one loose and frantically flapping to no avail. She was on a 12 inch 'nylon' spider web strand. Then all the sudden; very quickly this hugh spider speeds directly for her. She's panic streakened. I grab the strand and she falls down into ivy; no movement. After finding her and cutting what I safely could, I take her in for a soapy wiping. The webbing somes off and she's released outside.
Strangely; shortly after, all my (about 60-80) hummingbirds disappear.
I'll see if they are back tomorrow.

Does this spider go after small birds???
