Nuthatch

Latin name: Sitta europaea

The nuthatch is a plump bird about the size of a great tit that resembles a small woodpecker. It is blue-grey above and whitish below, with chestnut on its sides and under its tail. It has a black stripe on its head, a long black pointed bill, and short legs. It breeds in central and southern England and in Wales, and is resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatch.

Best looked for in mature woods and established parkland in central and southern England and Wales, on the sides of tree trunks and underside of branches. Occasional sightings in Scotland.

Have many of these visiting our bird table, we live backed onto nature reserve. They are delightful to watch, very bossy.

Spotted a Nuthatch today on my peanut feeder...looked very healthy...I live in the countryside which is heavily wooded in the west Midlands, near Market Drayton. This is my first time seeing this bird.

For the last few days we have had a Nuthatch feeding from the nut feeder upside down, which amused us with. Not seen this bird in our garden before! We live just outside of Guildford and our garden is full of trees and mature bushes...just perfect for lots of different birds.

Spotted a Nuthatch feeding upside down on our garden bird feeder. Knew it was not a tit from its long beak. Took photo to confirm! Julie, Rochdale, backing onto Roch valley woods.

I saw one of these no more than two feet away from me this morning as I walked our dog, this gorgeous little bird really perked me up and made walking with sodden shoes and the rain lashing in my face all the more bearable. Thank you for helping me identify it!

we have a nuthatch vist our nut feeder on a regular basis when he does I call out to my wife nutter's back, is it the case that they all feed upside down because our nutter does, I can only think that it stops the small peices of nut going in his eyes!

I took a photo of one of these in my garden today, we too live near a mature park and woodland but in Liverpool.

Lovely photographs, thanks to you I have been able to identify the bird I saw in our garden today. We live in a heavily wooded area so the info as to the Nuthatch's habitat also helped to identify it.

I live near Plymouth. Two of these Nuthatches are coming into my garden everyday to feed from the feeder - they're brilliant! They seem to defy gravity the way they run up and down the garage wall. I think they live in the woods that my house backs onto.
