Redstart (male)

Dinas RSPB

Phoenicurus phoenicurus
AKA: Common redstart
Redstarts are immediately identifiable by their bright orange-red tails, which they often quiver. Breeding males look smart, with slate grey upper parts, black faces and wings, and an orange rump and chest. Females and young are duller. Redstarts 'bob' in a very robin-like manner, but spend little time at ground level. It is included on the Amber List as species with unfavourable conservation status in Europe where it is declining.

How large is a redstart? I have a bird as big
as a blackbird with a beautiful, finch- like song
in the garden but unsure of its name.

Since they are declining in Europe I am pleased that I spotted one in a park in Brussels, what a lovely little bird.

I have just had a redstart on my bird feeder. It's the end of December! Watched him bobbing up and down throughout the garden. First time we have had one of these. Is it uncommon in the winter?

Is it possible for these to be in South Africa

I have a bird in my garden who looks like this, is about 50% larger than a trush and is quite inquisitive.

someone pointed me in the direction of a bee guide but I cannot find an image to compare
