Bullfinch (male)
14-DEC-2005 Gary Martin

Bullfinch (male)

Llanelli,Wales

Pyrrhula pyrrhula
The male is unmistakable with his bright pinkish-red breast and cheeks, grey back, black cap and tail, and bright white rump. The flash of the rump in flight and the sad call note are usually the first signs of bullfinches being present. They feed voraciously of the buds of various trees in spring and were once a 'pest' of fruit crops. Recent declines place it on the Red List. (Info from www.rspb.org.uk)

The branches of a bush in my front garden in Preston, Lancashire just started jerking in a strange way and then out popped this handsome fellow. He perched for a few minutes and was either eating insects or small buds. He didn't turn his body to eat, but just kept leaning backwards with his head, leaving his claws in the same position. He was somewhere between a large sparrow and a thrush in size - very striking. This is the first time I have seen a bullfinch and I identified him from this image - thank you!

I moved into a first floor flat in Shrewsbury and put up a bird feeder on a 're-engineered' coathanger just outside my sitting room. The idea was to attract some wildlife and enhance my view as well as feed local birds.

I've had the usual sparrows but this morning I spotted a most remarkable looking bird feeding from my feeder - it turned out to be a bull finch, brilliant, stunningly attractive, well worth the exepense for even a brief glimpse.

hi , im hoping you can help me although my details are very unsure lol, whilst working i spotted a small finch size bird which i believe was very similar to this bull finch except the breast had less red with 2 black stripes running down either side and continuing around the body , ps has strange as this sounds the breast could of been yellow. a shot in the dark i know and not very useful but its head doing not knowing what it was, as you can tell im not a keen bird watcher although i do try and show a little interest . also great pics

I saw a male and female Bullfinch in the lay-by opposite the Weston-On-The-Green airfield last week. They were feeding in the hedge on buds like the write up says.
I - in my ignorance - thought that it was an exotic bird that had escaped from an Avery.Still if it's on the red list i'm quite chuffed at having seen a rare British bird.

Whilst doing the RSPB's Birdwatch today with my daughter we spotted at the birdfeeder a male bullfinch. So distinct and bright we had to look it up to be sure. Jan 27th 2008

We spotted a male bullfinch feeding on the bushes in our garden this morning (Dec 27 2007). We live in a western suburb of Cardiff, UK.

I'm not a twitcher and I don't remember seeing one before so had to find what we'd seen. The colour on this bird was fantastically vivid. Very pleasing to see something on the RSPB's Red List.

He was in the garden a few minutes but hasn't returned yet. Plumage will be a clear giveaway though.
