Goldfinch with young

Auvergne, France

Carduelis carduelis
AKA: European goldfinch
A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.

Think I may have just spotted one of these in our garden - beautiful little bird. It's tail feathers were black with white spots, red flashes on the face , yellow flashes on the face.

further to the bird I rescued - It looked exactly like the goldfinch below - except - mine had a very long (for the size of the bird) narrow, thin, needle like beak, nothing like the photos i've seen in my book or on the internet.
Anyone out there who can enlighten me on this please?

one of these beautiful tiny things flew full belt into my window, crashing to the ground, stunned. I carefully scooped him up and gently examined him. kept him warm and snug inside my cupped hands - after about 10mins I felt movement. standing by an open window I opened my palm but he seemed to prefer sitting where he was, then, I actually saw his 'light' come on, with a look of 'OMG, where am I?' a few mins later he left my hand flying up into a large silver birch. he waited there for a further half hour or so, eventually leaving, I hope he found the rest of his flock, I have to think he did. WOW ...... what an amazing feeling he left me with.

I have two goldfinches flying against my third floor window trying to get in. they have been doing this for some hours now and i am very worried that they are going to exhaust themselves! Is there anyone who knows why they should be behaving this way? And what can i do to help them?

Great shot Gary. I wouldn't have guessed the young one as a goldfinch if I hadn't seen it next to it's Mum(or dad?).
