Buzzard

Llanelli, Wales

Buteo buteo
AKA: Common buzzard
The commonest UK bird of prey, it is quite large with broad, rounded wings, and a short neck and tail. When gliding and soaring it will often hold its wings in a shallow 'V'. It is variable in colour from all dark brown to birds with pale heads and breasts, all have dark wingtips and an unbanded tail.

Brian.I saw a buzzard today very close to Junction 7 on the M61 Motorway, close to Horwich, Bolton. I live close by and watched it for about ten minuets whilst walking my dog. It was just has the picture shows it, However the under side of its body and wings were golden yellow, the best thing I have ever seen.

I saw a buzzard swoop across the road I was driving down, not 20m in front of my car and land in a tree. It was the most amazing thing I have Evernote seen. Sighting was on 27/04/2012 near Haydock Golf Club on Newton Lane/Rob Lane at the side in Golborne Park Wood WA12. Sighting was at 8.50am.

August 22 2011 Templepatrick, N.Ireland arrived home to find a young buzzard sitting on top of the roof of my bungalow
There have been two adult birds flying here in the last three years and I assume this is their offspring
Great picture

We saw one in our garden yesterday. It had a collard dove in it`s claws. It dropped to the ground and we must have startled it and the dove managed to make an escape. It is the first one we have ever seen. It was magnificent.

Mystery solved (i think) I have one of these birds flying nearby, it's been with us for two or three days now, it fly's very high and catches thermals. It has a single high pitched cry, it sounds almost distressed in fact. Huge creature, very impressive. I've been trying to identify it's markings and this picture helped no end.

18/03/2011. My husband and I plus our neighbours spotted 7 of these birds soaring very high and tumbling in the sky as though doing some kind of courtship, their wing spans could have been anywhere between 6 and 8 foot across, the only time I have ever witnessed anything like this before was while holidaying in Vancouver several years ago that time I was seeing bald eagles. We live on the edge of Cayton Carrs Wetlands some 4 miles from the east coast of Yorkshire.

My partner and I were staying in Mark, Somerset and had seen five or six large birds perched on sign posts which I assumed were large owls out in the day! these pictures have helped a great deal in trying to identify what we had seen.

A stunning bird of prey! I was driving in Worecester on Tuesday 25.01.11. and an enormous Buzzard startled me as it flew up from a hedgrow & flew right across the car at windscreen height. I live in London and feed all my little garden birds to it was a suprise and a great memory from my day in the country roads around Evesham/Stratford/Worcester. Just had to check the bird out on the web As I was heading back to London via the train, I asked the taxi driver about the bird and he said it would definately have been a Buzzard. Gregory Wright
