Pierce Legare Wiggin, Jr.

I was googling my father's name, just to be sure I had his WWII RCAF unit right, when I came upon a site that had pictures I've never seen of him. http://www.americanairmuseum.com/media/21590 He had joined the RCAF because he was too young to sign up to be a pilot in the U.S. He was a member of the 336th Fighter Squadron - It had been designated as No. 133 (Eagle) Squadron, and was made up of American volunteers to the Royal Air Force. They were transferred to the US 4th Fighter Group, based at Debden Aerodrome, England, and they were known as "The Rocketeers". The squadron flew Spitfires until American P-47 Thunderbolts became available in sufficient numbers to equip the group in 1943.
He came back after the war and was a flight instructor for a while before becoming an editor for the United States Army Aviation Board for Accident Research based in Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Most of the helicopter pilots in the U.S. Army come from there. When he retired, he golfed, which was his passion. He lived in Florida after my mother died, spending his last years in Tampa, near MacDill AFB. Happy Father's Day, Daddy. (Written by my sister, Martha Jean (George) Wiggin Langston)
