Trillium

Everyone has favorites. Trillium has been my favorite wildflower since I was a kid. My wife accuses me of taking a photo of every trillium I see - not quite :)

Once common in North America, they are becomming increasingly scarce. From seed to flower takes seven (7) years! They can be difficult to grow, but horticulturists have produced some lovely hybrids. The book "Trilliums" by Frederick W. Case, Jr. & Roberta B. Case; published by Timber Press 1997; is worth finding if you have any interest in this flower.

In the past botanists had placed trillium in the lily family (Liliaceae). They have recently been placed in their own family - Trilliaceae.
