27 Heavy Weather

Last week the temperatures were up to 80*F (27*C) for several days.
We had a very mild winter and the warmest March on record.
Everything is blooming 4-6 weeks ahead of normal.
Last night the temperature plunged to the low to mid 20's (-4 to -7*C).
New York is a big producer of apples, cherries and grapes.
Fruit farmers could see a 90% crop failure this year!
Heavy weather is not just big storms.
A clear calm FREEZE at the wrong time can be just as devastating.
This photo shows frost damage to the flowering quince in my backyard.
I doubt that I will see any fruit on this bush this year.

A great close up showing the froast damage, I hope the farmers are lucky. There is always something to contend with.

What Mieke says is how I've heard re frost & fruit trees... okay if you only have one or
two to worry about, not so good for the orchardists unless they have a special set-up!
This is a lovely shot of the flowering quince Timothy.

We are having the same problem here - sunny days and frosty nights. We are truly at the mercy of the elements.

a great capture of the blossoms
what I know about fruit farming is that when the fruit tree is blooming and a frost is predicted that they keep the blossoms wet as a protection against the damages by frost.

Yes, it´s the kind of heavy weather we don´t realise like that.
