Thanks - its actually what we call a pop-rivet (not sure if thats just a UK name). Its been pulled without being used to fixed anything together. Its about the size of a broad bean seed.

I'm not sure what it is, but it is beautiful and makes a lovely photo. I will guess that it is the handle of an old sword.
