Thanks very much, Sally, Michael, and Hal. Hal, I think it depends on what the bird is doing. My observation is that when they are hovering, their wings often seem to go in a figure 8 motion. I'm sure if you Google your question, you will get some valid answers. There have been considerable high-speed photo studies that would likely answer your question.

Wonderful image Terry. l wonder what percentage of images capture the wings in the UP position and how many the opposite. The wings either make a brief stop or small apparent slowing down at rotation at each end (like a figure 8). You probably know the mechanics of the wing strokes. l'd be interested to know.
The new camera is just superb for these little guys. Superb isolation and colors..

Another stunning and perfectly captured pic of this gorgeous Hummingbird, Excellent work Terry. Wish we had more variety in our area. We seem to be short of bird life here.
